Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) has an intensely sweet and floral aroma. It is an uplifting beautiful floral scent, with gentle apple undertones. It is sometimes described as resembling Rose oil. Although the more discerning nose will smell the difference. It is also described as holding a middle position between the sweetness of Rose and the sharpness of Bergamot. Because of this neutrality it blends really well with lots of other oils, particularly Lavender and Bergamot.
The Oil of Balance
Geranium balances the production of sebum in the skin, making it a great oil for skincare. This balancing actions derives from the fact that Geranium is an adrenal cortex stimulant. The hormones secreted by the adrenal cortex are primarily regulators for hormone balance. Geranium is therefore a great oil for pre-menstrual issues and menopause, where the balance of hormones can be off kilter.
Geranium also has a stimulating effect on the lymphatic system. It is great for cellulitis and fluid retention in the ankles. It also has a tonic effect on Both the liver and kidneys.
Additionally, geranium is thought to be a useful scent to keep the insects away. Indeed it is thought that this is why geraniums are often used in window boxes. So it can be a great insect repellent. Particularly when mixed with Bergamot or Lemon.
Ancient civilisations regarded Geranium as a powerful healer. Used in Aromatherapy, Geranium reduces feelings of stress and anxiety, sadness, fatigue and tension. It enhances concentration, improves cognitive function and balances the emotions as well as the hormones.
